The Sound Of Music takes place in Salzburg, Austria right before the start of World War II. Maria Rainer is a postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, the local Benedictine monastery. Maria’s free-spirited personality worries Mother Abbess about Maria’s candidacy for being a nun. Mother Abbess encourages Maria to spend time outside the monastery to have Maria decide on whether she wants to continue life at Nonnberg Abbey.
Maria is assigned to serve as a governess to the von Trapp family, whose widowed patriarch is left with seven children. Maria falls in love with the children as well as Captain Georg von Trapp and must make the overwhelming decision of leaving the life she has always known to caring for a family that becomes her own. This classic love story told through musical storytelling has been shared with many worldwide and continues to be retold to this day.
Production History
The original production of The Sound Of Music musical made its debut at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut and then premiered in Boston, Massachusetts in 1959. Later that year, the musical moved to its first Broadway theater, Lunt-Fontanne Theater, before making its home in the Mark Hellinger Theatre.
This production won the team several Tony Awards as well as a handful of nominations. The original Broadway cast album became the best-selling albums for 16 weeks and sold millions of copies. In 1965, the original musical production was also adapted into a film and won five Oscars at the Academy Awards.
Since its debut and its revival in 1998, The Sound Of Music has taken theater stages by storm with several domestic and international productions as well as tours around the world. However, in December of 2013, the live production of the musical was televised on NBC with a star-studded cast for its very first time.
