Sam Hunt became an instant country heartthrob following his debut album Montevallo in 2014. Fans everywhere dreamt about throwing a house party with Hunt. Even those who were not fans of country music were fans of Sam Hunt. Hunt’s music is not the homegrown bluegrass country that many people think of when they think country. He has created a style of country that is all his own, bringing in pop, R&B, and hip-hop influences. His voice is rough and enticing, as many country heartthrobs are, but he is also able to mix speaking and rapid-fire singing into his songs in a way that truly sets him apart from other country artists.
Before his solo-career, Sam Hunt had a publishing deal in Nashville to write songs for other artists. He is credited with writing songs for artists such as Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington, and Reba McEntire. Eager for something more, Hunt independently released the single “Raised on It” in September 2013. By January of 2014, Hunt had signed a recording contract, and was on his way to his own fame.
Hunt’s breakout fame in 2014 led to the demise of his relationship with his girlfriend. After two years of touring and promotion of Montevallo and climbing the ranks to the top of Nashville’s elite, Hunt had to hit pause. He had to win his girlfriend back and succeeded in doing so. In 2017 they were married.
Now, three years following the release of his first album, Hunt is back and more ready than ever. Since his debut, other artists have taken his lead and blended country with rap and pop, but Hunt is here to remind people who successfully did it first. His new album, Southside, is a warm and welcome reminder of this. The album still calls back to the traditional country roots, but it also includes some of his riskiest work. At the time of his first album, Hunt went as extreme as he felt he could, but now, years later, as he has watched the changes the country genre from the sidelines, he knows he can push the envelope even further.
