The Masters is one of the four major championships is professional golf, and is held at the Augusta National Gold Club every year. Amateur champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts first started the tournament in 1934. Many see the Masters as the highest level of play, considering its nature of being an invitational event with fewer players than the other major championships.
The green jacket is such an important symbol in the sport of golf that the champion must return it to the Augusta clubhouse a year after the victory. There is also a Champions Dinner held on the Tuesday before each tournament, only to be attended by past champions and board members. In 1963, a new tradition was formed where a past champion or other legendary golfer would hit an honorary tee shot to commence the start of the tournament. Fred Mcleod, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer are just a few examples of these players.
While most players are after the green jacket, the monetary prize is no joke either. When the tournament started, the prize money of the tournament was $5,000 with the winner receiving $1,500. In 2014, The prize money totaled $9,000,000 with the winner receiving $1,620,000. Winners also have their names engraved on the silver Masters Trophy. The lowest scoring amateur to make the cut for the tournament is awarded the Silver Cup.
A Par-3 contest was introduced in 1960, and is played on the Wednesday before the tournament begins. This fun event has golfers using their kids as caddies, making the event a blast for the entire family. There have been 94 holes-in-one recording in the history of the contest.
Horton Smith was the first winner of the tournament in 1934. Jack Nicklaus has the most wins under his belt, followed by Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Jimmy Demaret. Tiger was the youngest to ever win the tournament at 21 years old. In 2013, an astonishing player by the name of Guan Tianlang came to compete at only 14 years old!
