The Formative Years
In 1975 on Christmas Day, Iron Maiden was created by the bassist Steve Harris. Over the next few years, the band solidified its line-up and played in different pubs across England to gain recognition. It wasn’t until 1978 when the band recorded its first demo. They later sent a copy off to a London-based DJ who ended up playing it regularly at a heavy metal club.
Within a year, the band was signed onto a record label and released their self-titled album in 1980. They headlined their own UK tour and followed it up by being an opener for Kiss on their 1980’s Unmasked Tour. In 1981, Iron Maiden released their second studio album entitled Killers and, with much success, performed their first world tour.
Iron Maiden became a huge hit in the heavy metal world. With the release of their third studio album in 1982, Iron Maiden saw it rise to the top of the UK Albums chart with the album also becoming a top contender in many other countries. In 2010, The New York Times stated that Iron Maiden had sold over 14 million copies of The Number of the Beast internationally.
Current Whereabouts
After their third album, Iron Maiden continues to prove again and again that their music is needed and has been well-awarded. It wasn’t until the late 1990s, when Iron Maiden received their first Grammy nomination, that the band began receiving recognition awards. From then on, Iron Maiden has won awards for being the best live act, having the best metal performances, and being the best band throughout England overall.
