When John Waters’ 1988 film of the same name was adapted into a musical stage play, first appearing in Seattle in 2002, it was immediately a huge hit. It moved to Broadway later that same year, and in 2003, it won a whopping eight Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.  

Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a plus-sized teenager who becomes an overnight celebrity when she’s chosen to dance on a local TV dance show. With the sometimes-reluctant help of teenage heartthrob Link and others, Tracy leads a campaign to integrate the show to include music and dancers of color every day, and not just on the monthly “Negro Day.”  

It’s a delightful story for anyone who loves to see good triumph over evil, and the bullies to get their comeuppance, and the music is entirely contagious. Fans of the original move will be enchanted, and brand-new theater-goers of all ages will love it.
