One of the most beloved holiday shows in history, A Christmas Carol is both a timeless classic and a perennial favorite. For many, it has become a family tradition, and the Christmas season is not complete without a trip to see a stage production of A Christmas Carol.
Since Charles Dickens penned his famous novella, which was first published in 1843 and has the unique distinction of never being out of print to this day! The first edition, which sold out in an unprecedented five days when it was released a few days before Christmas, was an immediate sensation. In fact, the novel was so popular that it transformed the celebration of Christmas itself, which had heretofore been a relatively unimportant holiday in Britain. The story is credited for reviving and popularizing such traditions as caroling, Christmas trees and the exchanging of Christmas gifts.
The book was not without its detractors, as Dickens was not subtle about his criticism of the upper classes, along with society’s failure to help the poor and destitute. Nevertheless, it became one of the most popular books of its era.
Over the years, there have been countless stage adaptations of A Christmas Carol, from the original stage production in 1844 to one of the versions audience members will see when they find A Christmas Carol tickets today.
The story centers around Ebenezer Scrooge, a man so miserly that “Scrooge” has come to be used as a term for anyone who is greedy and stingy. Scrooge blames the poor for their own misery, mistreats his long-suffering employee, Bob Cratchit, rejects his family, and calls Christmas a “humbug.”
On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is confronted in his home by the ghost of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley. The specter reveals that he has been doomed to an eternity of suffering because of his own disregard for the misfortune of others, and that Scrooge is headed for the same fate. On this special night, Marley has been sent to offer his old partner one chance to escape the same destiny. Scrooge will be visited by three spirits, who will offer him “...the chance and hope” to change his destiny.
Scrooge is visited in succession by the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Each of these visitors offers a series of lessons that reveal to Scrooge, and to the audience, the story of how he became the miserable, embittered man he now is, how others are affected by his actions, and what will happen in the future if he does not change his ways. The experience transforms him completely and, by the end of the play, Ebenezer Scrooge becomes the living embodiment of the true Christmas spirit, determined to make up for past transgressions and to bring about a better future for himself and everyone he knows.
