After 6 spectacular years on Broadway, the Tony and Grammy award winning triumph will continue to make the Earth move on tour across North America this Fall.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by Douglas McGrath that tells the story of the early life and career of Carole King, using songs that she wrote, often together with Gerry Goffin, and other contemporary songs by Barry MannCynthia WeilPhil Spector and others.

At Carnegie Hall in 1971, Carole King sings "So Far Away". Then, in Brooklyn 1958, 16-year-old Carole tells her mother, Genie, she is going into Manhattan to try to sell a song to music publisher Donnie Kirshner. In the long tradition of mothers, Genie is opposed to her daughter's wish and in the equally long tradition of teenagers not caring about their mother's opinion, Carole goes anyway. At 1650 Broadway, she hears the "1650 Broadway Medley". She then sings her new song "It Might As Well Rain Until September". Donnie says he will take it and hopes she has others. At Queens College, Carole meets a handsome young lyricist named Gerry Goffin. They agree to collaborate, musically and romantically, which in both cases turns out to be a fertile arrangement. When they go to Donnie's to play their new song, Carole confesses to Gerry that she is pregnant. Gerry asks her to marry him. It gives her an extra depth of feeling when she sings their new song for Donnie, "Some Kind of Wonderful", which The Drifters then record.

The musical uses a 12-member orchestra consisting of three keyboards, two guitars, bass, drums, percussion, two reeds, trumpet/flugelhorn, and trombone/bass trombone. In addition the performer playing Carole King plays the piano if it is Katie Brayben (London) whereas Jessie Mueller (Broadway) needed piano lessons so she could mime!

Since it’s award winning performances in 2020, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tickets have been selling at an exponentially higher rate!

It’s been five years since the show’s Broadway debut, but Beautiful continues to delight audiences with its inspiring true story. Beautiful is a musical about Carole King, showcasing her journey from the young songwriter all the way to her legendary place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. From her many pop classics, among the greatest in the music business, to her own life-changing chart toppers like “Tapestry,” Beautiful hearkens back to King’s early days and then charts a journey through her lifetime. The musical tells the story of Carole King's rise from schoolgirl to superstar and all of her challenges along the way, including the hurdle of finding her own voice and stepping into the spotlight herself. Beautiful is all about becoming Carole King: composer, songwriter and singer. Those who grew up in the 60s could not escape songs such as "One Fine Day," "Up on the Roof" and "Oh No My Baby," three-minute soundtracks which became an important part for the heartbreaks and amusements of puberty. While many might have heard her name but don’t know quite where to put her, one thing is for certain - everyone knows her songs.

Setting/Synopsis

Long before she became Carole King, a respected music legend, she was Carol Klein, a Brooklyn girl with passion and courage. She fought her way into the music business as a teenager and, in her early 20’s, was married to the man of her dreams. She pursued a remarkable career as a songwriter for rock and roll's greatest musicians such as The Drifters, The Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and The Monkees. But when her fairytale life seemed to lose its luster she found her own true voice and reached for the microphone herself. Beautiful tells the inspiring story of the Carole King and her impressive rise to fame, which was accompanied by her husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin, as well as songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Even today, Carole King is considered an icon and one of the most successful songwriters in the music industry.

For those that are not able to make it to New York, there is good news; the musical is also on tour across North America. International customers also have the chance to see the production live in London and Australia.

Famous Cast Members and Creator

To celebrate the musical’s 5th year on Broadway, Carole King made a surprised appearance with a spectacular and certainly unforgettable performance in Act 2, when she rocked out at the piano performing the closing number Beautiful instead of Chilina Kennedy, who usually portrays Carole King. The Carole King Musical written by Douglas McCrath tells the story of King’s life and includes important figures in her life which are also included in the ensemble, such as Evan Todd as Gerry Goffin, Kate Reinders as Cynthia Weil, and Ben Jacoby as Barry Mann. Beautiful brings a wonderful variety of classics, written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, to the stage.

Music

Carole King’s song are cutting edge. Featuring memorable earworms like “You've Got a Friend,” “One Fine Day,” “So Far Away,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “Up on the Roof,” “You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Natural Woman.” It is interesting to see how Carole King's songs have stayed relevant now for half a century and still strike a chord with today’s audience as timeless hits for eternal teens. The heart of rock and soul, greatest single written by Carole King is without a doubt “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” sung by Aretha Franklin. This song continues to unify and empower. Another one of King's greatest hits, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," is already over 50 years old, released in late 1960. Many famous artists have put their own spin on the song, with great versions by Laura Nyro, Bryan Ferry and Roberta Flack. This Tony and Grammy award-winning musical phenomenon is drawn from the songs everyone remembers and a story that no one ever forgets.
