About the Los Angeles Dodgers
After a long term love affair with the city of Brooklyn, the Los Angeles Dodgers found their way to the west coast in 1958 and the fans of LA now bleed Dodger blue. Over the history of the Los Angeles Dodgers many great players have put on the uniform and championships have followed. Whether they were in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, die hard fans get their Dodgers tickets in order to see their team take on some of the National League’s best!
The Los Angeles Dodgers franchise was established in the late 1800’s beginning in Brooklyn as part of the American Association, a baseball league that was attempting to challenge the superior National League. The team went through many name changes going from the Atlantics to the Grays to the Bridegrooms, the franchise did not settle on the Dodgers moniker until the 1930’s. The team has seen success over its history whether they were the Brooklyn or Los Angeles Dodgers, winning a total of 21 National League pennants and six World Series titles. While always a winning franchise, the Los Angeles Dodgers are perhaps better known for the historic moments they were a part of.
The important moment in Dodgers and sports history is also one of the most important in American history, when the Dodgers helped in the breaking of the color barrier by second baseman Jackie Robinson. Racial segregation was prevalent across the United States, and Major League Baseball was no exception. African American players were not given a chance, and over the first half of the 20th century no African American stepped between the lines of a major league game. Then came in Branch Rickey, Brooklyn Dodgers president and general manager, who was on a mission to desegregate baseball. According to the Dodgers Website, Rickey was looking "for a ballplayer with enough guts not to fight back," and found that in the young Jackie Robinson, to which he signed to a minor league deal with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945. Throughout his career in a Dodgers uniform, Robinson faced intense racial scrutiny from fans, players and teammates, but even with that was able to be successful. He was selected to the All Star Game six times, won the Rookie of the Year award in 1947 and MVP in 1949. He has become one of the most important figures in sports history, and Major League Baseball recognized him, retiring his #42 across the league in 1997.
After the move from Brooklyn, the Los Angeles Dodgers went on to win five of their six World Series titles. The latest came in 1988, when the Los Angeles Dodgers took on the American League’s Oakland Athletics. Game 1 of the World Series got off to a quick start, when Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco hit a grand slam. They held the lead all the way until the bottom of the ninth with the Los Angeles Dodgers trailing 4-3. The Oakland Athletics brought in future Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley to close out the Los Angeles Dodgers and take Game 1. With two outs and one man on, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda brought in a hobbled Kirk Gibson to pinch hit. Gibson had injured both of his legs and wasn’t anticipated to play in the series, but on a full count slider, Gibson hit a 2 run walk off home run which was later dubbed "The Greatest Moment in LA Sports History." The Los Angeles Dodgers went of to dominate the series 4 games to 1.
