Jesus Christ Superstar - History
From starting as an album to becoming a Broadway musical, Jesus Christ Superstar has shown itself to have multiple lives. Originally opening on October 12, 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre and Jesus Christ Superstar only ran on Broadway for only 18 months. It had a much more successful run on the London stage, running for over eight years at the Palace Theatre. While Jesus Christ Superstar did not achieve incredible success on Broadway, the touring company of the show was well received. Ted Neeley starred as Jesus on the tour, a role he was also cast in for on the big screen adaptation. While Jesus Christ Superstar may not have seen initial praise; the story remains one that is enjoyed by young and old alike who continue to buy tickets to see the musical.
Jesus Christ Superstar is the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus as seen through the eyes of his disciple Judas. Judas struggles to understand Jesus' followers who have become unrealistic and have began to look at Jesus as a god. Throughout Jesus Christ Superstar, Judas remains disillusioned and is out to prove that Jesus is nothing more than a man. He plots and he schemes to take Jesus prisoner, only to realize that his plot will make Jesus be remembered as a hero.
In 2000, Jesus Christ Superstar was revived on Broadway. While it once again did not last long, Jesus Christ Superstar was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. A national touring company was formed in 2002, and once again toured the country singing the original songs composed by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber including the title song Superstar.
