About Hairspray
Hairspray is the classic film and musical that everyone's talking about! The 1950s are out and you can smell change in the air. It's 1962 in Baltimore, MD and teenager Tracy Turnblad - a big girl with big hair and a big heart - has a passion to dance! By winning a coveted spot on a local television dance program, "The Corny Collins Show", Tracy is transformed into a hometown celebrity overnight. It is up to Tracy to overcome the reigning dance diva, but at the same time try and win over the heart of Link Larkin, all while trying to integrate a television program without messing her 'do! This is a story as much about dancing as it is a story about a tumultuous era in American history, where one person is doing what she believes is correcting an injustice.
Hairspray the musical is based on the New Line Cinema film, Hairspray, which was originally released in 1988. Hairspray the musical also inspired the remake of the 1988 film; the recreated version of Hairspray was released in 2007 and stars a celebrity cast which includes John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah, and Zac Efron (of High School Musical fame).
Hairspray originally opened in Seattle in 2002 for previews before debuting full time on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City.
