About Bill Cosby
William Henry Cosby was born on July 12, 1937 in West Philadelphia, PA; he was one of four brothers. Bill Cosby got his start in comedy while performing stand-up at small local clubs. After being discovered, he landed a role in I Spy, an action television show during the 1960s. After his stint on I Spy, he began starring in his very own television series, The Bill Cosby Show during the late 1960s which only ran for two seasons.
After The Bill Cosby Show was taken off the air, Bill Cosby decided it was time to turn back to his education. Bill Cosby was in the process of pursuing a postgraduate degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts when he became involved in an educational Public Broadcast series entitled The Electric Company. Shortly after working with PBS on The Electric Company, Bill Cosby began starring in another educational television series called "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids", the difference between this new series and his previous series, was that this particular show was animated and Bill Cosby was the voice of the main character. Bill Cosby wrote about these educational series that he participated in for his thesis and graduated with his doctorate degree in education in 1977.
The Cosby Show debuted in 1984 and became Bill Cosby's biggest success. Bill Cosby insisted that he be given complete creative control over the show and he was granted that. The Huxtable family that was featured on The Cosby Show, was very similar to Bill Cosby's own family. A lot of the material from the show was material taken from Bill Cosby's video, Bill Cosby: Himself, which was released in 1983. The Cosby Show ran through 1992 and was dubbed "revolutionary" by People Magazine and "a real breakthrough" by Newsday.
After The Cosby Show ended, Bill Cosby embarked on a number of new projects including more movies, documentaries, game shows, and books. Some popular films that Bill Cosby starred in include I Spy Returns (1994), The Cosby Mysteries (1994), Ghost Dad (1990), The Meteor Man (1993), and Jack (1996). Bill Cosby has also released many comedy albums including, most recently, The Bill Cosby Collection (2004) and State of Emergency (2008).
